Social media brings people together in ways we’ve never seen before. The name itself, social media, describes it perfectly. We can socially consume media. No matter what you’re dealing with, you can find a connection within an online community.

Social Media & Mental Health

Mental health is a widely discussed topic nowadays. This wasn’t the case in previous generations, and social media plays a big role in why we talk about it now. I can think of many times when I saw someone online open up about something they were struggling with. Whether in a YouTube video, an Instagram post, or a Reddit thread, mental health discussions can likely be found on every social media platform. When people talk about their struggles, there are countless users leaving comments saying they relate. Unfortunately, for many of us, we often feel alone when we face difficulties in life. If you don’t have a supportive community from those around you, turning to those online can be life-changing.

You’re Not Alone

Those of us who are surrounded by a great community can still benefit from the discussions taking place on social media. Sometimes, if nobody around you has experienced something you’re going through, it’s helpful to hear from someone who has. This applies to mental health as well as other struggles that come up in life. For example, if you’re recently diagnosed with cancer, you might feel really alone. Even if those around you are supportive, nobody will truly understand besides the ones in your same position. You could find those people on social media and it could significantly improve your experience when dealing with a life-changing issue.

I believe the community we can find on social media creates more good in our world. Although there are many negative interactions that I’ve witnessed on social media, there is so much good. I’m hopeful that social media can continue to bring people together and make us feel less alone, especially when we’re living in such a divided world.
