Creating a Portfolio

As my time in the ICM 502 course, Visual Design comes to an end, it’s time to put it all together. After going through all of my completed projects, I created a portfolio. A portfolio is the best way to showcase your skills. When putting one together, it’s important to consider what is your best work and what accurately represents who you are as a designer.

My main professional goal is to grow in the field of social media. Whether it’s creating content, curating an Instagram feed, or promoting an event, I’m happy to do it. My goal when creating this portfolio was to display the relevant skills that I developed from this course. I decided to use various pieces that related to event promotion and social media. This included posters, flyers, and social media posts. I followed this up by using brand materials I created, everything from labels to designs for menus. I feel that all of these pieces show my ability to establish and promote a brand and relevant events. I included my website and email newsletter designs as well because this knowledge will come in handy for marketing purposes. I also chose to show what I learned about type, specifically how different fonts can evoke different moods. This is an important skill for brands because you want to ensure that your brand is giving off the right message. The font that a brand uses can make or break that message. Including all of these pieces that are relevant to my professional goals is what makes a great portfolio.

Overall, I am pleased with how my work has turned out. I entered this course with limited knowledge of graphic design. I was eager to learn more about the best practices in creating designs, especially when focusing on a brand and social media. My time learning in this course and completing these projects has certainly helped me move toward my future goals.
